Draw & Measure Tool

The draw and measure tool can be a sophisticated tool that allows you to add custom mark-up overtop of your map. You can add a variety of geometry types including, points, lines, polygons, circles and text. It allows you to communicate/highlight what you may be describing before printing or exporting your map.

Below is a brief description of each tool available.

Point allows you to add a simple point
Line allows you to draw line segments
Freehand Line continually draws lines as your right mouse button is held down
Rectangle draws a simple rectangle
Circle draws a simple circle from the center out
Eclipse draws an eclipse from the center out
Polygon draws a simple polygon from line segments
Freehand Polygon continually draws a polygon as your right mouse button is held down
Text adds text to a defined location Clear Drawings – Clears all the drawings on the map
Clear all the drawings Removes all the custom drawings currently on the map

Drawing
Drawing can be a very useful tool to illustrate and communicate your thoughts onto the map. If you think of the drawing tools as a typical paint program you might be familiar with on your desktop, you should be comfortable using these tools. If you make a mistake (we all have) you can easily clear your drawing with the “clear drawings” link in the window.

Measuring
If you wish to measure distances or areas you can use any of the tools described above with the exception of the point and text tool. Be sure to have the measure checkbox checked before adding any mark-up to your map so the tool is aware to measure once the drawing is complete. Once your drawing is complete a label will appear close to your drawing with the distance or area of the geometry drawn.
